chum kiu
Chum Kiu is the second free hand form of the Wing Chun system. As with Siu Lim Tao, it is essential to learn and understand Chum Kiu correctly in order to effectively practice Wing Chun. First form teaches many of the essential hand movements of Wing Chun, and second form teaches how to correctly move the body into the correct positions in relation to the opponent while maintaining the correct hand and elbow.
In this form, students will focus how to properly turn the body while focusing primarily on the Bong Sau block, but using other blocks as well. There are few new hand techniques in Chum Kiu as students learn how to turn and step into contact with an opponent’s arms and energy without changing their first form arm technique structures. The most common mistake seen when watching someone demonstrating Chum Kiu is that the turning and stepping movements seem disconnected to the associated blocking and striking techniques. If the blocks fall out of their proper Siu Lim Tau positions as the student moves, then they are incorrect. The only exception is that the height of Bong Sau changes in each section as this block can be done at different heights as long as the elbow remains higher than the wrist and the student’s center line is approximately two inches up the arm from the wrist. Without the ability to correctly move and step, to deliver energy through the movements, and to maintain correct hand and elbow positioning, Wing Chun will not work. Therefore, it is essential to learn and understand second form, Chum Kiu, in order to properly practice Wing Chun. |
